• Lab Gruppen Introduces the CA Series for commercial installations

It often happens that many of the professional audio brands that Uli Behringer buys for what he now calls Music Tribe go into a sort of black hole when it comes to new products. When was the last time you heard of a new Tannoy or Turbosound?

But it there is no rule without exception, and Lab Gruppen has recently introduced the Energy Star* Certified CA Series amplifiers for commercial installations.

The new CA Series amplifiers are targeted at bars, restaurants, corporate environments,
retail destinations, hotels, and many other applications where background music or PA systems are needed.

    The CA series
amplifiers have a power scheme with automatic power On/Off based on the input signal, which reduces
consumption when a signal is not present. These amplifiers are convection cooled, eliminating fan noise. They are offered in 60W, 120W and 240W per channel, with each version available in one or two channels.

    Models are:

    • CA2401 (1x240W), CA24042 (1x240W)
    • CA1201 (1x120W), CA1202 (2x120W)
    • CA601 (1x60W), CA2402 (2x60W)

The amplifiers offer flexible mounting options with included brackets for surface mounting and various rack-mounting configurations. This adds flexibility as a single product and can be housed in a half 19" rack or full-rack enclosure. Connectivity is also flexible with a balanced line input and a stereo mono-sum RCA. A front panel master volume and bass/treble control is provided.

The CA series can also incorporate a remote volume control with Lab Gruppen’s CRC-V series of wall control accessories. The CRC-V is equipped with a single volume control knob, with integrated illumination, and an RJ-45 connector for use with any CAT5 or CAT6 cables in a single-gang/EU wall enclosure format.

The CA series Commercial Install amplifiers can accommodate a wide range of applications such as a single
8 Ohm speaker per channel, dual 8 Ohms speakers or a 4 Ohm load per channel, a line of 70V or 100V high impedance speakers with transformer tappings, subwoofer and satellite set in 8 Ohms mode, two channel models driving two zones.

Håkan Alfredsson, Product Manager for Lab Gruppen, said: "We saw a general need for simple-to-use products for all types of small to midsize commercial applications. The CA series fills a gap where Lab Gruppen has not been present until now. We are proud to present this series with building blocks of small, simple, and cost effective units filling all the audio needs in commercial spaces."

CA series commercial install amplifiers will be available for shipping in October 2019.

    Balanced and unbalanced connections

There are two basic ways to carry an electrical audio signal.

    • The first one is unbalanced. The signal is carried on a two-conductor cable. Unbalanced signal connectors have two pins, such as the RCA (also called Phono and Cinch, commonly used by home hi-fi equipment) and the unbalanced 1/4" (used in musical instruments and semi-professional audio). Multi-pin connectors can also carry

    Choosing loudspeaker cable

The importance of cables for the connection between the amplifier and the speaker is often controversial. Hi-fi aficionados spend fortunes on cables that promise spectacular results, and our short auditory memory and subjectivity lead many to confirm these improvements in their systems.

The truth is that there are very few serious studies on the importance of the cable in relation to the perceived sound quality. A cable has impedance (opposition to electric current as a function of frequency), capacitance (behaves to some extent like a capacitor) and inductance (behaves like a coil). However, a few years ago an AES article concluded that the differences between cables were very small in terms of capacitance and inductance, and only recognized the importance of impedance.

Therefore I invite you to leave aside any cable with such an exaggerated price as its promises, and look only at the gauge (thickness, cross-sectional area) of the cable, as far as the electrical characteristics are concerned (then there are important... Read more

    Intelligibility and its measurement

    1. What is intelligibility?

The state or quality of being understood. It can apply to an idea or a writing, but in our context it relates to the spoken word and, less commonly, to music.... Read more
