• Neutrik NA2-IO-DPRO Dante interface from Neutrik

Shipping this month, the new 2-in, 2-out Neutrik NA2-IO-DPRO Dante interface features two switchable Mic, Line, AES/EBU inputs and two switchable analogue line, AES/EBU outputs, and two Dante ports providingfor redundancy or device daisy chaining.

The NA2-IO-DPRO front panel provides two latching XLR inputs and two XLR outputs. AES/EBU operation is seamlessly and independently auto detected for inputs and outputs. Using Neutrik’s free DPRO controller software for Mac or PC, +48V phantom power can be applied, microphone preamplifier gain, pad, and high-pass filtering can be set per channel, and input channels can be linked for matched operation. Output channels can be muted or unmuted within the software.

The rear panel provides primary and secondary Dante ports on Neutrik etherCON connectors. The secondary input can be configured for redundant or Switched mode (for daisy chaining). When operating in Switched mode, in conjunction with a 60 W PoE injector, up to eight devices can be daisy chained. Up to four devices can be daisy chained with a 30 W PoE injector.NA2-IO-DPRO is AES67 compliant. Power must be supplied externally via either a PoE switch or a PoE injector per IEEE 802.3af/at, class 2 or no classification at 6W.

With optional mounting brackets or a rack panel, the NA2-IO-DPRO can be mounted below tables, in floor boxes, in racks, or on the stage truss.

    DRAGONFLY
Neutrik is also announcing the introduction of the opticalCON DRAGONFLY FiberOptic Camera Connector Series; the latest addition to the company’s opticalCON family of products. The DRAGONFLY series reportedly offers advanced lens technology for the Broadcast and AV markets, ensuring robust, reliable connectivity that is easier to maintain than common hybrid camera signal transmission systems of similar performance.

Based on the company’s patented XB2 Technology, DRAGONFLY is said to offer near to physical contact connectivity levels of efficiency. With a signal surface 322 times larger than physical contact surfaces, its innovative fusion splice, high-performance fiber lens transmits UHD 4K and 8K signals with low loss. Additionally, the oversize signal surface provides for low sensitivity to dust and dirt. Requiring no specialist tools, "cleaning is quick and efficient, using compressed air and water".

With its push/pull locking mechanism, IP68 rated dust and waterproof rating in mated condition, and proven anti-kink boot design, DRAGONFLY offers a long life of 10,000 mating cycles. DRAGONFLY connectivity particularly offers protection against vibration, with lower potential for damage. It is also field serviceable —with a fusion splicing kit.

    Balanced and unbalanced connections

There are two basic ways to carry an electrical audio signal.

    • The first one is unbalanced. The signal is carried on a two-conductor cable. Unbalanced signal connectors have two pins, such as the RCA (also called Phono and Cinch, commonly used by home hi-fi equipment) and the unbalanced 1/4" (used in musical instruments and semi-professional audio). Multi-pin connectors can also carry

    Choosing loudspeaker cable

The importance of cables for the connection between the amplifier and the speaker is often controversial. Hi-fi aficionados spend fortunes on cables that promise spectacular results, and our short auditory memory and subjectivity lead many to confirm these improvements in their systems.

The truth is that there are very few serious studies on the importance of the cable in relation to the perceived sound quality. A cable has impedance (opposition to electric current as a function of frequency), capacitance (behaves to some extent like a capacitor) and inductance (behaves like a coil). However, a few years ago an AES article concluded that the differences between cables were very small in terms of capacitance and inductance, and only recognized the importance of impedance.

Therefore I invite you to leave aside any cable with such an exaggerated price as its promises, and look only at the gauge (thickness, cross-sectional area) of the cable, as far as the electrical characteristics are concerned (then there are important... Read more

    Intelligibility and its measurement

    1. What is intelligibility?

The state or quality of being understood. It can apply to an idea or a writing, but in our context it relates to the spoken word and, less commonly, to music.... Read more
