• DAS launches SARA compact line array

DAS Audio launched last week at ISE2023 its compact line array system, SARA, the little brother of LARA (both being part of the ARA series, like the coming mid-size format MARA) presented at PLS last year. Unlike LATA, it is not cardioid, although its bass complement, SARA-SUB, is.

SARA is a symmetrical system with 3000Wrms of amplification, achieving a nominal maximum SPL of 139 dB at 1m, being intended for medium sized events and installations.

SARA consists of 2 x 8″ loudspeakers (specifically, LARA's side speakers) custom designed for mid and low frequencies and a HF compression driver with a waveguide (which also serves as a phase plug for the LF) horizontal dispersion, which is 100º for the SARA-100 model and 80º for the SARA-80 model.

The SARA class D amplifier integrates a switch-mode power supply with power factor correction (PFC). The amplifier provides 3000Wrms of power (6000W peak), which is divided into 4 channels, two of which are used in bridge mode to power the HF driver, and the remaining two channels are used to power the front cone speakers.

The three-point rigging system can be used for both SARA and SARA-SUB, allowing arrays of up to 24 SARA and 16 SARA-SUB units to be flown. In addition, using the JP-SARA accessory, up to 12 SARA units can be hung below the SARA-SUB. The FSS (Fast Set Splay) system allows the angles to be adjusted in 1° steps from the stacking position and significantly reduces assembly time, according to the manufacturer.

Like the LARA, the SARA system uses NFC technology (what cell phones use for payments) for unit identification, so that the ALMA control and monitoring system knows which one is which. Likewise, the 'health check' function performs self-test duties, checking both impedance as well as frequency response via an integrated microphone.

    Other SARA specifications:
    Frequency Range (-10 dB) 70 Hz – 17 kHz
Nominal Amplifier Power (continuous) 3000 W
    Enclosure Construction Birch Plywood
    Enclosure Geometry Trapezoidal 10º
    Dimensions ( H x W x D ) 265 x 655 x 515 mm (10,5 x 26,0 x 20,3 in)
Net Weight 34,0 kg (75,0 lbs)

As far as the companion bass systems, the SARA-SUB in a subwoofer with an 18" speaker with neodymium magnet and 4" voice coil, which is complemented by a 15" speaker, with 3" voice coil and also with neodymium magnet, to create the cardioid dispersion pattern that reduces unwanted energy in the rear.

The SARA-SUB's built-in class D amplifier features 4 channels in bridge mode for each of the speakers and switching power supply with PFC. The built-in DSP optimizes the signal parameters for the speakers and allows for 14 dB of rear power compensation in the 40 Hz - 80 Hz band. Its rated maximum SPL is 133 dB.

The rigging system allows the SARA to be hung underneath the SARA-SUB using the JP-SARA adapter.

    Other SARA-SUB specifications:
    Frequency Response (-10 dB) 35 Hz - 125 Hz
Nominal Amplifier Power (continuous) 3000 W
    Enclosure Construction Multi-layer birch wood
    Enclosure Geometry Trapezoidal, 10º
    Dimensions ( H x W x D ) 590 x 660 x 790 mm
    23,5 x 26,0 x 31,2 in
    Weight 67.0 kg ( 148.0 lb )
